Case Study
Kate works in a residential care home that provides respite care for adults recovering from mental health problems. A 22-year-old resident called Josiah is staying at the care home for 2 weeks. He has depression and has just told you that he’s worried about developing diabetes as he eats sugary and fatty foods when he’s feeling down, and often struggles with leaving the house at the weekends. Josiah asks you if being depressed makes diabetes more likely?
- If you were Kate, what would you tell him about the link between depression and diabetes?
- What exercises could you suggest he tries at home?
- What healthy coping mechanisms could you encourage them to try instead of comfort eating?
- How does diabetes get diagnosed?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
