Understand the historical context of learning disability.

Case Study

Harry is 58 years old and has severe learning disabilities. He lives in supported housing with three other gentlemen. None of these men were given the choice about who they shared a house with, and they do not really get on very well. Harry has spent most of his life in the local mental asylum which closed about 16 years ago. He is still very institutionalised and finds being out in the community very stressful. He does not understand the concept of choice and only feels safe when told what to do. Harry expects the same rigid routine every day and becomes upset when this is changed. The other men living in the house do not understand this and get angry with him.
  1. How could you help Harry to get used to living in the community?
  2. How could you help Harry to decide where he wants to live?
  3. How are old methods of care and support impacting upon Harry's current situation and affecting the kind of support he needs now?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
