Understand how views and attitudes impact on the lives of individuals with learning disabilities and their family carers

Case Study

Kevin has moderate learning disabilities and lives in a house on the local estate. He is supported to maintain his tenancy by a number of support staff. One of the tasks he takes very seriously is helping keep the area free from litter and he is supported to go ‘litter picking’ twice a week in the local area. Kevin has a number of behavioural issues and can become very aggressive at times. You are supporting Kevin one day when a group of youths start shouting and making fun of Kevin as he is busy ‘litter picking’. You can see that Kevin is getting very upset, but is determined to carry on. 1. What could you do?   2. How might the negative attention from the youths impact upon Kevin?         It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
