Case Study
Mr Gill is a frail old man with moderate dementia who is being looked after at home by his family with the help of carers. Mr Gill’s family is finding it difficult at times. They know that as you spend time with someone with dementia, you need to support and encourage them to do whatever they can for themselves, and to offer only as much help as they need. This is not always easy - not least because they find it frustrating watching something being done slowly when they are capable of doing it more quickly and easily themselves.
11. What could you do to support Mr Gill and his family?
2. What keys things should you remember when assisting someone with dementia?
3. Why should you encourage and support Mr Gill to do things for himself?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
