Support individuals with specific communication needs

Case Study

Jasmin is an elderly lady who has gone in to the Hill care home while her husband is in hospital. Her family have moved back to India so she is alone. Jasmin has moderate dementia and English isn’t her first language. Jasmin’s husband and family always looked after her and always went out with her so there was little need for her to speak to people in English. The staff have found Jasmin is reluctant to eat and drink and gets very distressed when they try to encourage her to eat. Fredrik, one of the staff, unpacks her things and finds a hearing aid unused in a box. The staff presume it is Jasmin’s and try to get her to put it in but she refuses. Fredrik suddenly has the idea of finding someone that could speak to Jasmin in her own language. The senior staff call the hospital to speak to her husband in order to get further guidance about her communication needs.
  1. How would you review Jasmin’s communication needs and the support provided to address them?
  2. How would you identify specialist services relating to communication technology and aids?
  3. How would you adapt the practice shown by staff to improve communication with Jasmin?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
