Be able to work in an inclusive way

Case Study

You have been asked to organise a family fun day. The event involves coordinating the activities, food, parking and displays.

Think of 5 considerations you might make to ensure that everybody can enjoy this event.

It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.

Look at your setting’s policies on inclusion, and equal opportunities. These policies help to make sure that all those using your setting feel included and welcomed. Does your practice reflect your policy? Share your findings with your staff team at your next staff meeting and find ways to develop and improve what you do.
Look up speech difficulties on the internet and find out more about some of the reasons children find learning to speak difficult. For example, consider English as a foreign language, stuttering/stammering, hearing loss, cleft lip and palate. We need to be aware of them so that we can support and assist the individual, giving them the best opportunities to be included.

What extra skills might you need to communicate effectively with a individual who has hearing difficulties or who is deaf? Are there are any short courses in your local area that you could take, to find out more?
Ask your setting manager to give you documents that are available for parents to read before making their commitment to use your setting. How would you adapt this information for:A blind person? A person who does not speak English? A person who cannot read?
