Case Study
You are meeting with Tanya, a 14 year old girl who has some behavioural problems and has had 3 care placements in the last year. She has been looked after since she was 11, and her behaviour has become challenging since she started attending secondary school. Tanya is reluctant to engage with you and seems distracted and disrespectful when she does speak. Tanya is struggling at school and you suspect that she may be being bullied.
- How might you encourage Tanya to engage with you?
- What goals and targets might you set together, and how could you involve Tanya in deciding what these should be
- What strategies could you draw on?
- Who or what could help you?
- How could you find out about Tanya’s wishes and the thoughts of others who are involved in her care?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
