Engage young parents in supporting their children’s development

Case Study

You are working in a children’s centre with a group of young mothers. During a general discussion about the stresses of being a young mum with a toddler or baby you become aware that a lot of the difficulties seem to revolve around the lack of help given by the children’s fathers. Some of the mums say that it’s easier if the father leaves everything to them but others are not so sure. You realise that few fathers use the children’s centre and that this is an area that could be developed.
  1. What barriers might young fathers experience in becoming involved with their child’s needs and development?
  2. How could you find out what facilities and services young fathers would like?
  3. What factors may prevent young fathers taking advantage of any facilities or services you may organise?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
