Understand the context of supporting children and young people through foster care

Case Study

A 7-year-old child named Samuel has come into your care. His mother, who is a single parent, has become very ill and is in hospital. This was a very sudden situation that allowed no preparation time. Samuel attends a local Catholic school each day and has been brought up as a devout Catholic. It is now the summer holidays. Samuel is a lively boy who loves to have his two best friends over to play once a week. It is expected that his mother will be in hospital for at least six weeks.
  1. How will you settle Samuel in to your home?
  2. Will you find a way of him having his weekly contact with friends?
  3. How will you find out more about and maintain his religious activities?
  4. What issues would you anticipate with Samuel as he adjusts to the new situation?
  5. What strategies will you have in place to support him?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
