Be able to respond to emergency situations

Case Study
You have been asked by the class teacher to collect some additional resources from a storage cupboard on the other side of the school. While you are walking to the cupboard you meet a young man in the corridor who is carrying a DVD player and you do not recognise him. It is school policy that all visitors sign in at the office and that they wear a badge at all times. You cannot be sure who this person is or their reason for being in school at that time.
- How you would deal with this incident?
- What policies or procedures does your setting have which deal with this kind of event?
- What are the potential risks associated with approaching this young man, or alternatively ignoring his presence?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
