Case Study

One of your colleagues has just come back from sick leave. Recently, she has been taking quite a bit of time off work for personal reasons and seems distracted and distant when she is at work. When it’s just the two of you left at the end of a meeting, you ask her if she is ok. She tells you that she has been diagnosed with depression and coming into work is extremely difficult for her. Later that day, you hear a group of your colleagues discussing her poor performance and lack of work ethic. One of them says they are going to confront her about it.
  1. What will you say to the group?
  2. Do you think confronting her would be a good idea?
  3. How can you and the rest of your colleagues make her feel valued and respected?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
