Case Study
Your friend, Edgar, is a secondary school maths teacher and is talking to you about a new pupil that has joined his class. He tells you that his parents are Chinese so he won’t have to worry too much about him doing well as Asians are hard workers and good at maths. He goes on to say that normally, he has a meeting with the parents of new pupils and encourages them to support their child at home but he won’t be doing that this time.
- What will you say to Edgar?
- Is this positive stereotype having a damaging effect on the new pupil and their parents?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
