Know how to support children and young people in relation to risk management

Case Study

You are working in a college with access to a wooded area. You have heard a rumour that some of the young people have begun to build a tree house in the woods using materials they have found and are bringing in from outside. You have also heard that they intend to set traps to stop other people getting to the treehouse.
  1. What are the risks to the young people building and intending to use the treehouse?
  2. What challenges and excitement does it provide for them?
  3. What are the risks to others if the comments about ‘setting traps’ are true?
  4. Are there any aspects of this that present unacceptable levels of risk? If so, what are they?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
