Know the range of service provision available in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare.

Case study

Jim is 17 and has just been released from a Young Offenders Institute (YOI). He spent six months in there for stealing. While he was in the YOI he decided that he wanted to stop taking drugs, change his life, and try to get to university to become a social worker. However, his parents do not want him back in their house.
  • What services are available to help Jim to stop taking drugs?
  • What services are available to help Jim find somewhere to live?
  • If Jim had turned 18 while in the YOI what services would be in place to help him?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
