Understand the importance of key areas of health and safety in relation to health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings.

Case Study

You have been caring for a client for some time now and have got to know her family quite well during this time. The client’s family has often told you that they are really grateful for the way you seem to really connect with her and has asked for your help in choosing a suitable birthday gift for her. One of the family has asked if you would mind going with him to the shops after your shift ends. He has offered to pay you for your time.
  • What risks, if any, are there to the security of yourself or others in this scenario?
  • What policies or procedures does your setting have for dealing with this kind of situation?
  • How will you respond to the offer?
  • What else should you do about this situation?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
