Understand team dynamics

Case Study

You have just become part of administrative staff of a large recreational facility. A number of the team are long serving with seniority and there are also a number of younger, less experienced staff. You have become aware that there are workplace issues. These seem to result from poor communication between the staff, and a lack of understanding of individual skills. The friction between the younger and older members of staff has escalated from disrespectful behaviour – negativity, sarcasm, belittling – to bullying and confrontation.
  1. How would you try to get the team to work together?
  2. What steps could you put in place to start to resolve the issues?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
