Know about written and verbal communication in a business environment

Case Study

You have been asked to encourage a team in your organisation to use iPads to help them communicate and plan their work more effectively. They are rather negative about using this communication method. Rian, the sales manager for Scotland, has found it very useful and wouldn’t be without his iPad now. He can plan tasks on it, adjust the schedule as necessary and look up information. He would be able to communicate with his team if they had them. It is especially useful when he is away from his base and needs to contact people.
  1. Identify the barriers to effective communication in this scenario.
  2. Write suggestions of how you could communicate the change more effectively.
  3. Look at how your organisation communicates, within each department or teams and with other departments. How do all relevant people find the information they need?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
