Understand theory and educational frameworks which inform knowledge and understanding of early years practice

Case Study

A 3-year-old boy in your class, Liam, was recently adopted by Sanjeev and Maneeta. They have told you he did not have a happy early childhood and his biological mother was not very loving or reactive to his needs. You are struggling to build a relationship with him and get the feeling he is not telling you the truth about how he is getting on because he does not trust you.
  1. What attachment style do you think Liam experienced with his biological mother?
  2. What can you do / say to build a trusting relationship with Liam?
  3. Do you think his early childhood experiences could be affecting his development?
  4. How would you work in partnership with his foster parents?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
