Case Study

This is a continuation of the case study you have been working on from the last two lessons.Harry is a 70-year-old gentleman who has dementia. He is cared for at home by his wife Mary, but has been admitted into a care home for a short stay. Mary and his daughters came in with Harry and explained what Harry' s needs were. He had always been slightly deaf but his dementia had caused an increase in communication problems. They explained that if you faced Harry when talking to him, most things could be communicated, but he could get distressed and wander. He got particularly distressed at unfamiliar surroundings or where there were a lot of people talking at once. Harry likes to have certain items close by. Jo is going to be Harry’s carer, and she is also caring for Agnes who has Alzheimer’s. Agnes is a happy soul and likes singing out loud at any time of the day.
  1. Explain how Harry’s communication style, abilities and needs can be used to develop his care plan.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
