Support literacy development

Case Study

Jasmin is a 6 year old who is falling behind her classmates with her reading. Though she enjoys story time and is enthusiastic about play-acting stories, she struggles to concentrate during group activities and will distract the other children by shouting out and telling jokes. The teacher has mentioned to you that it might help to organise some supported reading sessions away from the other children, but is concerned that Jasmin will not want to learn away from her group of friends and that she might become embarrassed.
  1. What could you do to support the teacher in this situation?
  2. Can you think of any alternative strategies?
  3. Who will need to be consulted about decisions?
  4. How could you encourage Jasmin to enjoy reading sessions?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
