Understand the importance of promoting positive well-being and resilience of children and young people

Case Study

Daniel has been taken into care because his father has been physically and verbally abusing him. During lunchtime one day some of the other children start laughing, and Daniel runs out of the room in tears. When you go to speak to him, Daniel tells you that he was upset because the children were laughing at him. You know this was not the case but Daniel assumed that he was doing something that would cause them to ridicule him. Daniel’s self-esteem and confidence is obviously extremely low.
  1. How could you promote Daniel’s well-being and resilience?
  2. What strategies might you put in place to do this?
  3. Whose help and support might you need to be successful?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
