Case Study

A charity which helps homeless people in Bristol has been given a generous donation by a local business. The directors, Leda and Phil, can now afford to build a shelter in the local area and decide to take on a couple of paid workers to run it. They have never taken on paid workers before, all of the current employees are volunteers, but they feel like it’s the right thing to do as the work will be very demanding and requires experienced workers.
  1. What laws do Leda and Phil need to be compliant with when taking on paid employees?
  2. What laws govern charities in the UK?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
