Case Study

The month of May has been unseasonably hot in the South of England and it has been reported in the news that this change of weather has been encouraging people to buy summer clothes and accessories, sunscreen, outdoor furniture and supplies.  Leo, the owner of a children’s clothing shop ‘Teeny Tiny Tigers’ wants to know if the warmer weather this month has been having a positive effect on his business. He asks his accountant Jamila for:
  • A snapshot of the business in May
  • Information about whether the business is doing better this month than in previous months of the same year
  • Information about whether the business is doing better this month than in the same month last year (when the weather was cooler)
  1. How can Jamila find out this information?
  2. How could Jamila present this information to Leo?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
