Understanding medical conditions for exercise referral

Select one of the medical conditions you have been looking at in this lesson and think about the specific nutritional advice and exercise programmes you would give an individual with that condition.
  1. What are the recommended levels of exercise?
  2. Do they need to do aerobic or strengthening?
  3. Do you need to consider any risks before they start the programme?
  4. Are there any risks with certain exercises?
  5. Are there any exercises that they cannot do or that would make their condition worse?
  6. What nutritional advice can you offer them?
  7. Think about your boundaries as a professional as well with advice
  8. What macro and micro nutrients do they need more of? If any?
  9. Would you get them to do a food diary to analyse?
  10. What information would you need from them to really help them with their nutrition?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
