Case Study

Rona is a lady diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Rona’s daughter has arranged for her mother to live with her, and she moved in last month. Her daughter works full time and pays for carers to stay at home with her mother. Her daughter gets very concerned as Rona is prone to wander and she doesn’t think Rona should go outside. Rona was always active and took long walks with her husband who cared for Rona until his death last year. Besides memory loss and some confusion Rona has always been fit and active and was a primary school teacher before she retired. 1. If you were Rona’s carer what would you do to get to know her? 2. Should you prevent Rona from going outside? 3. Should you follow the daughter’s instructions to the letter? 4. Does the Mental Capacity Act have any impact on the daughter’s wishes? 5. How could you help Rona to reach her full potential at this stage of her life? It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
