Case Study

Maggie lives at home with her daughter Sarah. Maggie is in the advanced stages of dementia, rarely speaks and now spends almost the whole day in bed. Sarah wants to ensure that Maggie still has things which bring her pleasure, comfort and stimulation. Sarah works full time but spends as much time as possible with her mother. Carers come in to get Maggie up, give her lunch and check on her in the afternoon.
  1. If you were Maggie’s carer how could you help Maggie to keep active?
  2. How could you help Sarah?
  3. Whose rights must be protected?
  4. Which legislation helps them both?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
