Case Study

Selina is a 56 year old lady who has just been diagnosed with dementia. She has lived alone for over ten years and is terrified by her diagnosis. Selina has always been an active individual and enjoys playing tennis and listening to Radio 4 everyday. She has a daughter who comes to see her once a month and Selina hopes she will one day be a grandmother. Selina is originally from Jamaica and her roots are very important to her. When her daughter comes to visit she enjoys cooking Jamaican food for her.   1.   Imagine you have been asked to provide support for Selina due to her diagnosis, how would you use the information provided to create her care plan? 2. How would you involve others in Selina’s care plan? 3. How will Selina’s care need to change when she enters the different stages of dementia, and how will the communication between her and others (including you) be affected? It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
