Case Study

Ian is in his late twenties and has a learning disability. He wants to begin shopping and cooking for himself but the team working with him have noticed that when he gets to a supermarket he starts to bite his hand. This has happened several times, and the biting has got so bad he has drawn blood.
  1. What is the trigger for this behaviour?
  2. What function is this behaviour serving?
  3. What is the behaviour communicating?
  4. If you were working with Ian how could you support him?
  5. What avoidance actions could you take?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
