Case Study
Jamie is 27 with a severe learning disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He is currently living in a specialist learning disability residential care home where he is frequently agitated and distressed, particularly at night time when he can become difficult to manage.
There are fewer staff available at night time and on several occasions, they have had to restrain him. Following restraint, he has been confined to a 'quiet room' for periods of time.
His parents have asked that he be permitted to stay with them at the weekend but the request has been refused.
- Which aspects of this case study indicate that Jamie is likely to have been deprived of his liberty?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
