Case Study
Jack has just moved into the home where you are working. He is a retired university lecturer whose dementia has become so severe that his children can no longer cope with him at home.
His behaviour is proving to be a challenge to the staff in the home. He is always up, dressed, and trying to get out of the front door of the home at 7.30 in the morning – banging on it loudly when he discovers it is locked. He insists on pacing up and down in the day room, often getting in the way of other residence, and frequently yells at them to ‘wait until I have finished’ when they complain at him.
He yells the same thing to you every time you try to get him to sit down, and he seems unable to explain why he wants to leave the building in the morning.
- Why do you think he is behaving in this way?
- What might be the barriers to communication with Jack?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
