Case Study

Jack has a learning disability and is very unsteady on his feet. He is living currently living in a care home where staff have noticed a number of behaviours that concern including self-harm and biting members of the care team. At times, Jack seems to display behaviour that challenges in order to gain access to an activity, object or event. Staff often resort to giving Jack what he wants, rather than deal with the behaviour.
  1. If you were part of the team how would you deal with finding out what is triggering the behaviour, and how would you use positive reinforcement to change the behaviour?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
