Case Study
Helen works in a care home. Although one resident, Ms Brown, suffers from Prader-Willi Syndrome, she usually appears very happy to live there. Ms Brown has a slight temperature and a visit from her GP has been requested.
In the meantime, Ms Brown becomes very agitated, and attempts to leave the home, apparently believing she is married and has left her small son at home alone. Helen has tried to reassure Ms Brown, telephoning her mother to ask her to visit the nursing home, but in her anxiety, Ms Brown is pushing past her to go out of the front door.
- What are Helen’s accountabilities and limitations in supporting Ms Brown?
-
What might happen if Ms Brown left the home?
-
Would locking the door to prevent Ms Brown leaving restrain her movement?
-
What would you do in this situation?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
