Case Study
You are working with Joan who spends part of each day either pacing or sitting by the front door of home you work in. She has also started to pack all her clothes into carrier bags ready to go home with her husband. Joan has dementia and does not remember that her husband died ten years ago.
Today Joan packed her clothes as usual but she managed to slip out of the front door when a visitor came to visit the home. Fortunately, she was spotted by the family of another resident and persuaded to come back into the home. When you start to unpack her bags, she gets angry and then very tearful. You find yourself feeling very upset by the end of your shift.
- Reflect on why you might feel more upset after the shift.
-
What happened that was unusual?
-
How do you think that would make you feel?
-
What do you think could be changed?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
