End of life care

Samuel, a man in his early twenties, has terminal cancer.

His parents are wondering whether he should be admitted to hospice care as they think he is entering his last days of life. His partner, Jo, has been caring for him at home with the help of a home care worker, Jess, and wants to respect his wish to stay at home for as long as possible. The parents and Jo ask Jess what they should do.

  1. If you were Jess, what would you suggest?
  2. How can you assess his suitability for referral?
  3. What are the signs that someone is entering their last days of life?
  4. If Samuel did need to be admitted to hospice care, how could Jess talk to him about this?

It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
