Case Study

Soraya is 4 and today she has been very unsettled and quite emotional, which is most unlike her. While helping her to do up her coat to go outside to play you realise that she actually seems quite feverish. You mention this to a colleague who remarks that she thought Soraya could be coming down with something as she hardly touched her lunch and doesn’t seem to want to play with her friends. You are told that Soraya’s Key Person is currently at lunch and so is unavailable to deal with Soraya.
- From what you know so far, does Soraya’s condition require urgent action?
- What could you do now to care for Soraya?
- Whose responsibility is it to observe, monitor and care for Soraya if she is unwell at nursery?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
