Case Study

A new member of staff has joined your setting and it is her first week working in health and social care. She made a comment in the staff room that one of the clients she has been working with seems to do nothing but complain all the time. When you ask her what exactly the gentleman was complaining about she is unable to tell you. This is not one of the clients you have responsibility for. 1. How would you respond to your colleague’s revelation that she does not know what her client was complaining about? 2. How can you explain the importance of taking all concerns and complaints seriously as a way of reducing the risk of abuse? 3. What else should you do about what you have found out? It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
