Case study

Liam’s carer is keen for Liam to be ready to start school in September, and she has asked you to prepare worksheets for Liam to do with you at the setting. She has also expressed concern about the lack of structured teaching and learning at the setting, and wondered why you ‘wasted’ a morning in the local woodland allowing children to play.
You have spoken to your manager about your observations that Liam has become withdrawn and less confident at the setting recently.
Prepare notes to share with Liam’s carer at a meeting you have organised to discuss:
- The innate drive for children to play
- Links with the UNCRC and the EYFS statutory framework in relation to recognising the importance of play
- The importance of free play, and playing in nature
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
