Understand international approaches to children’s’ learning / Understand how international approaches inform current frameworks and practice

This article examines the provision of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in the US where individual states rather than central government set the standards. The scope and depth of programming varies greatly both across and within states, from comprehensive programs promoting health, social and cognitive development to others providing limited opportunities for social interaction and developmental stimulation. In some states, prekindergarten programs are administered by the state’s department of education and in others governance is deferred to local school districts, thus adding further to the variation.
  • What might be the benefits of this approach to early childhood education and care and what might be the disadvantages?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
