Understand procedures for responding to accidents and sudden illness

Case Study

You are caring for a vulnerable adult who has only limited communication skills. She seems to be unwell and is holding her stomach. A colleague says she knows that your client was in the garden earlier in the day and brought in some branches from a bush to put in her room. Your colleague is not sure but she thought there were red berries on the branches and they are not there now.
  1. What possible causes could there be for your client’s sudden illness?
  2. What should you do?
  3. Who should you ask for support and help?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
