Provide support for mobility

Case Study

Miguel is a 69 year old gentleman who has always been physically active. Twelve months ago he was diagnosed with cancer with secondary tumours in his spine. He has received radiotherapy and over the last few weeks has become paralysed in his lower limbs, and is now in a rehabilitation ward.Miguel is unable to walk or sit unless he is strapped in his wheelchair. He has been given certain exercises to do by the physiotherapist. The carers have been advised to assist Miguel with his exercises. Although he has problems with his legs he is also doing exercises to strengthen his arms and back. This consists of lifting weights in each hand and moving them upwards.Miguel is keen to do his exercises but says he can’t see the point of lifting the lightweight pink weights as he is strong in lifting and he feels it is not working on his muscles. The carers record Miguel’s progress with his exercises and report back to his physiotherapist.
  1. If you were caring for Miguel what would you report and record to keep track of his progress?
  2. How will you respond to Miguel’s feelings about using the lighter weights?
  3. What would you suggest in order to add variation to his exercises?
  4. How would you assist Miguel to prepare for mobility activities and exercises?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
