Support individuals to meet personal care needs

Case Study

Zara is a 73-year-old lady who recently suffered a stroke. Up until her stroke, Zara always took care of herself and didn’t need any assistance. Now, she has lost use of her right arm and hand, and finds it difficult to focus carefully on certain tasks. Her movement have been reduced and so she sometimes finds it difficult to manoeuvre in small spaces. Rhoda has been asked to assist Zara with her personal care in the morning. The facilities Zara has are quite small but Zara is comfortable with the idea of being assisted by another woman.
  1. If you were Rhoda, what is the initial information you would need to get from Zara in order to effectively support her?
  2. How could you promote active participation for Zara during the personal care tasks?
  3. Considering Zara’s condition, what would you expect to be the level and type of support she needs?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
