This document is ‘Guidance to support advocates in challenging decisions or actions with or on behalf of individuals’ from Voice Ability. Some people, including many men and women with advanced dementia or profound and multiple learning disabilities, may find it difficult to articulate their concerns in such a way that they are properly considered, irrespective of the level of support provided. Having an advocate can help provide a level of protection, ensuring that decisions taken are properly tested and based, as far as possible, on the person’s wishes and views. It can be necessary for an advocate to challenge decisions on the person’s behalf, if they are not able to do so themselves.
