Case Study

Erma lives at home and has mobility difficulties; she has a carer to come in every day to get her out of bed and again to assist her to get into bed at night. She also has someone to cook and serve her lunch. Erma has a family that live in the next town who visit when they can.
Sarah is one of Erma’s carers; she has been told by her supervisor to get Erma into bed earlier than her usual time of 7pm as she has other individuals to see.
When Sarah goes to get Erma undressed and into bed, Erma refuses and gets distressed.
- How could you deal with this situation if you were Sarah?
- How could Sarah support Erma’s wish not to go to bed early?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
