Support individuals who are distressed

Case Study

Nadia is a 75 year old lady who has been admitted to hospital following a fall. She is being treated for a fractured hip. Nadia lives at home and is the main carer for Stefan who suffers from moderate vascular dementia. Today Nadia has been transferred to Rose Hill home to help her mobilise and continue to get well after her fall.Dakshina is on duty when Nadia is admitted. Nadia becomes distressed because she is concerned about Stefan. While Nadia was in hospital, Stefan went into another local home for respite care while she recovered. Nadia thinks because she has come out of hospital they will send Stefan home to care for himself. She is also very distressed that she hasn’t spoken or seen Stefan for five days.
  1. Who could be contacted for specialist help?
  2. What factors would you consider before offering Nadia reassurance?
  3. How would you help Nadia with her distress and how would you document changes in her behaviour?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
