Support individuals to eat and drink

Case Study

Monique is a 73 year old lady who suffers from dementia. She has been a resident at a nursing home for some years now and enjoys her meal times. Rene has been asked to assist Monique with eating her lunch. Rene goes through the menu with her and is aware that Monique has a dairy intolerance. Rene then prepares Monique for her meal and checks the room is in an appropriate state. During the meal, Monique begins to choke, but Rene deals with this quickly by encouraging Monique to cough and clear her airway. Once the meal is finished Rene clears up the area and makes sure Monique is comfortable.
  1. What information has Rene learnt about Monique that she can use to guide her through the eating process?
  2. Is there anything else Rene should do to prepare Monique for the meal and how can she make the room appropriate for a meal time?
  3. How could Rene interact with Monique whilst Monique is eating?
  4. How can Rene involve Monique once the meal is finished?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
