Understand the potential effects on development of pre-conception, pre-birth and birth experiences

Case Study

You are working in a children’s centre and one of the mums comes in each day smelling of cigarette smoke. She already has a child in the centre aged 2 but she now tells you she is pregnant. How could you discuss with her the fact that smoking can be very harmful to both her unborn baby and the toddler she already has in the centre?
  1. Should you mention the issue at all?
  2. Do you think she is already aware and, if so, why has she not stopped already?
  3. What might someone’s reaction be toward you if you say anything about their smoking?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
