Case Study
In your children’s centre a grandmother brings in her 3 year old grandson and confides in you that her daughter has now been home from hospital for 3 weeks with her new baby but is not getting dressed each day.
The grandmother reports that the mum has said she is not getting enough sleep and that she is concerned the new baby will stop breathing. She says that the mother has asked her to bring George to the nursery for a couple more weeks.
The grandmother tells you she has offered to stay and look after the baby whilst the mum takes George to school but she says then her daughter became very angry, asking her not to interfere but just help by taking George to nursery.
- How would you advise the grandmother?
- Do you think the mother might have a problem?
- Is not getting dressed all day a big deal for a mum?
- Who could support this family and, in particular, the new mum?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
