Understand the role of the Early Years practitioner

Case Study

Jasminder is 18 years old and has decided she wants a career in childcare. She has all the necessary attributes of honesty, discretion, reliability, and she is hardworking and understands and loves young children, but she gets bored very easily. She thinks this might be a very good thing as children often get bored quite easily and need a constant stream of interesting things and people to interact with. Jasminder, however, actually gets bored with places and sometimes people, and is concerned that this might mean that childcare is not the career for her or that she is best suited to a particular setting or role in the childcare sector.
  1. What childcare roles might be suitable for Jasminder?
  2. How would she apply for a position without appearing to be so easily bored she would leave a job before really settling?
  3. Where are there childcare positions available where the children attending change regularly?
  4. What problems could arise for Jasminder if she changes jobs frequently in this sector and how might it affect the children in her care when she leaves?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
