Understand and be able to apply philosophical approaches which influence play provision and be able to review how theoretical perspectives and philosophical approaches to play contribute to own practice

Case Study

Your room leader has asked you to contribute to the overall planning for the nursery; this involves children aged 0-1 year 11 months, 2- 2 years 11 months and 3- 5 years. Your outdoor area is not utilised as effectively as it could be nor do you deem it to be an enabling environment. With no money spare to develop the outdoor area, use the philosophical approaches to play that you have researched to devise a plan for each age group. List the resources you will need for each age group and what your aims for the children are to achieve.
  1. Do the philosophical approaches you have explored work in your setting? If not, why not?
  2. Think of the children’s interests, ages and stages of development, how can the staff support the children by using your plan?
  3. How do philosophical approaches already influence your practice?
  4. How can you use these approaches to further develop your practice to support children’s play?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
