Understand theory and current frameworks which underpin children’s speech, language and communication development

Case Study

Asa is four years old. She was born with a cleft palate and intermittently loses her hearing as a result of glue ear. She often appears in a world of her own and has a very short attention span. She has difficulties in pronouncing sounds and words and, at nursery, her key person finds it difficult to understand what she is saying and what her needs are. This leads to Asa becoming frustrated and sometimes she throws herself on the floor in anger.
  1. Describe how Asa’s speech, language and communication difficulties might impact upon her overall development. Describe both the current and long term impact.
  2. How might a practitioner support Asa to minimise the impact of her difficulties?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
